Welcome to another season of MiHockey’s Michi-gamer!

We take great pride in our homegrown talent. Whether they grew up in the Mitten or we welcomed them here for college or juniors, they are our own. They represent the best place in the world for hockey.

Every morning, we pick one Michi-gamer from the previous night’s slate of games across all professional levels of hockey – one Michigan player who stood out above the rest.

Ann Arbor native Jeff Petry tallied his first goal of the season – which forced overtime – in the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-3 defeat against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night. After the Oilers cut a three-goal deficit down to one, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins entered into the attacking zone and found a trailing Petry, who buried a one-timer just above the slot to tie the game at 3-3 with 6:20 to play in the third period. Petry, who starred at Michigan State for three years, is now in his fifth season in the NHL – all with the Oilers. Through 16 games, the 26-year-old Orchard Lake St. Mary’s product has one goal and one assist.

NOVEMBER 13 – RYAN KESLER

Livonia native Ryan Kesler had a big night (two goals, one assist) out west as the Anaheim Ducks stormed back from two, two-goal deficits to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 6-5 in a shootout. With the Ducks behind 3-2 early in the third period, a series of short, quick passes allowed Kesler to streak into the slot and fire a bullet past Jonathan Quick to tie the game. Kesler’s second goal of the contest came later in the period as he collected his own blocked shot and buried a wraparound to keep the Ducks within striking distance. Anaheim forced overtime and came out on top in the shootout as Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg converted their chances. Kesler, 30, has 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 17 games.

seguinNOVEMBER 12 – TYLER SEGUIN

Three nights removed from a hat trick, former Plymouth Whalers star Tyler Seguin scored two more goals on Tuesday night to lead the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. With the Stars trailing 2-0 in the second period, a blocked shot from the point fell right to Seguin, who buried the loose puck to cut the lead in half. Less than a minute later, Seguin netted a power-play tally as he ripped a shot from the left circle past Mike Smith to tie the contest at 2-2. The two-goal performance helped the Stars snap their seven-game skid. Seguin, 22, now leads the league – along with New York Rangers forward Rick Nash – with 12 goals on the season.

gleasonNOVEMBER 11 – TIM GLEASON

Clawson native Tim Gleason buried his first goal of the 2014-15 season as the Carolina Hurricanes disposed of the Calgary Flames 4-1 on Monday night. With the Hurricanes on top 3-1 midway through the final period, Gleason found a seam in the slot and fired a loose puck – originally a centering pass from Hurricanes’ forward Jeff Skinner – past netminder Jonas Hiller to extend the lead to 4-1. The 31-year-old defenseman returned to Carolina this summer following a brief 39-game stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs at the end of last season. With his goal on Monday, Gleason now has three points (one goal, two assists) in 12 games this season.

wisniewskiNOVEMBER 10 – JAMES WISNIEWSKI

Despite a 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski registered a team-high three points as he dished out three assists in the losing effort. Wisniewski, a native of Canton, nearly guided the Blue Jackets back from a four-goal deficit. Wisniewski’s final assist on the night came on a power play early in the third period as he fired a slap pass from the point – which fooled Tampa Bay’s penalty killers and netminder Evgeni Nabokov – to Nick Foligno in front who nestled it into an empty net to cut the deficit to two. The former Plymouth Whalers star missed the previous three games with a broken finger, but still has six points (six assists) in 11 games for the Blue Jackets this season.
