Red Wings top Penguins in preseason opener

By @MichaelCaples –

The Detroit Red Wings officially started their 2014 preseason slate of games last night, and while it may not have been on TV in Michigan, there are video highlights to check out (which we have posted below).

Tomas Tatar and Pavel Datsyuk scored for the Wings, who will play again tonight in Chicago before returning home to host those very same Blackhawks on Thursday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Some stats to take a look at from last night:

  • LSSU alum Colin Campbell had four hits and four shots in just shy of 12 minutes worth of ice-time.
  • Xavier Ouellet led the team in time-on-ice, skating for 22:08. He recorded three shots and one hit.
  • Both Detroit goals came on the power play; the Wings were 2-for-6 with the man-advantage in the outing.
  • Jimmy Howard stopped 25 of 26, while Petr Mrazek was a perfect 10-for-10 in shots faced.
