Connor Hellebuyck recently signed with the Winnipeg Jets, but he still had one more college hockey-related item to take care of.

The Commerce native and UMass-Lowell product was named the winner of the inaugural Mike Richter Award today, given to the nation’s top college hockey goaltender.

Hellebuyck, who played high school hockey at Walled Lake Northern before advancing through the junior and college ranks, beat out Sam Brittain of Denver, Joel Rumpel of Wisconsin, Adam Wilcox of Minnesota and Clay Witt of Northeastern to win the new trophy.
