Michigan Tech’s Pheonix Copley signs with Capitals

The Washington Capitals announced yesterday evening that they have signed a goalie away from a Michigan school.

The NHL club has signed Michigan Tech goaltender Pheonix Copley to a two-year entry-level contract, announced by general manager George McPhee on the Caps’ official site.

Copley, 22, was the hero of the Huskies’ 2012 Great Lakes Invitational championship, leading his team to their first tournament victory since 1980. There, Copley stopped all 70 shots he faced for back-to-back shutouts, including one over a No. 7 nationally-ranked Western Michigan club.

The North Pole, Alaska native had a 10-13-6 record this season, along with a .911 save percentage and 2.51 goals-against average.
