Monroe native Matt Mahalak had quite a week, and the Canadian Hockey League took notice.

The Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) goaltender was named the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the time-frame ending on Dec. 1, after he posted a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout win, a goals-against average of 0.50 and a save percentage of .982.

Mahalak, a sixth-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, allowed only one goal on 57 shots last week, helping the Frontenacs climb to second place in the OHL’s Eastern Conference.

The former Whalers goaltender – he played three seasons with the Whalers before being traded to Kingston – now holds an 11-8-1-1 record with a 3.18 goals-against and .905 save percentage on the season.
