The Detroit Red Wings announced yesterday that they will be holding an online auction this week in support of the team’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.

The team will be auctioning off Jimmy Howard’s special goalie mask, pads, glove and blocker that he wore on Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Hockey Fights Cancer Night. The money raised from the goaltending equipment will go to two Metro Detroit Cancer Centers – Karmanos Cancer Institute and St. John Providence Health System – to help uninsured and underinsured women with the costs that come from diagnostic mammograms and breast cancer treatment.

The sticks used by the players in warm-ups prior to their Hockey Fights Cancer Night will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Van Andel Institute’s cancer research efforts.

Prior to the start of the auction, the Wings have already raised $51,000 this season, including more than $40,000 on Breast Cancer Awareness night.
