Krug, Bruins top Red Wings 4-1 Saturday night

After coming back from a 2-0 deficit Friday night to win their first road game of the season, the Detroit Red Wings came up short against the Boston Bruins on Saturday night.
Former Michigan State University defenseman and Livonia native Torey Krug shined against the Red Wings, recording the first regular-season goal of his career and adding an assist. Brad Marchand, Jordan Caron and Zdeno Chara also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
Henrik Zetterberg scored the Red Wings’ lone goal, burying a rebound off a shot from Justin Abdelkader in the first period. With the loss, Detroit drops to 2-1-0.
This was the first regular-season meeting for the new division rivals; the Original Six clubs have not played in the same division since the 1972-1973 season.
Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask collected the victory with 36 saves; Jimmy Howard made 22 for the Wings.
Boston scored first following a holding penalty on Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall at 8:56 into the first period. Krug’s slap shot from the blue line beat a screened Jimmy Howard just 15 seconds into a Bruins’ power play.
Detroit responded, when Zetterberg found the rebound off an Abdelkader wrist shot 16:48 into the first. The period would end that way, with Detroit being outshot 14-5.
Boston continued to pressure the Red Wings in the second period, and they added two more goals to the score sheet in the process.
Boston’s Brad Marchand collected his first goal of the season 36 seconds into the period, with a wrist shot over Howard’s blocker. After a solid forecheck from Boston and a scramble around Detroit’s net, Boston’s Jordan Caron added the third goal of the game for the Bruins with an assist from Reilly Smith, younger brother of Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith.
The Red Wings wouldn’t have much luck in the third either. After an interference call on Detroit’s Johan Franzen, a turnover at the Red Wing’s blue line ended up on Boston’s Zdeno Chara’s stick whose backhand shot found the back of Detroit’s net at 12:17.
The Wings will now return home to take on the Phoenix Coyotes Thursday, Oct. 10 at Joe Louis Arena.
