Michi-gamer: Pride of the Mitten (Week of May 27)
Welcome to another season of MiHockey’s Michi-gamer, now powered by Bauer Hockey.
We take great pride in our homegrown talent. Whether they grew up in the Mitten or we welcomed them here for college or juniors, they are our own. They represent the best place in the world for hockey.
Every night, we’ll keep an eye on those players, and every morning, we will pick one Michi-gamer of the night – one Michigan player who stood out above the rest.
MAY 30 – CHAD BILLINS
The Griffins might not have won last night, but Chad Billins at least found the scoresheet. The Marysville native found the back of the net in the third period, recording Grand Rapids’ only goal in a 4-1 Game 3 loss in Oklahoma City. Billins, the former leader of the Ferris State Bulldogs, has two goals and four assists in 12 postseason games this year – his first taste of pro hockey playoffs. In the regular season, Billins racked up 10 goals and 27 assists for 37 points in 76 games. The Griffins now look to even their Western Conference Finals series with the Barons tomorrow night, after falling behind in the series for the first time yesterday.

MAY 29 – JUSTIN WILLIAMS
The Los Angeles Kings won last night by a score of 2-1. Justin Williams had both the goals. Considering it was Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals, that’s even more impressive of an accomplishment for the former Plymouth Whalers star. Williams managed to get his stick on a scramble in front of the Sharks’ goal for the first goal of the night, registered at the 4:11 mark of the second period. Three minutes later, he struck again, this time with a quick catch-and-release off a rush up ice with teammate Anze Kopitar. The 31-year-old Whalers alum now has five goals in four Game 7 appearances – his team’s won every single one of them. Talk about delivering when it matters most…

MAY 28 – TOREY KRUG
When a guy inspires a hashtag reminiscent of Chuck Norris jokes, it’s hard for us to not pick him for Michi-gamer status – even if he’s been on this list quite a bit lately. On Saturday, Bruins rookie Torey Krug scored his fourth goal in his fifth game, becoming the first freshman defenseman to accomplish the feat in the post-expansion era of the NHL. The Livonia native has been the talk of Boston (and much of the hockey community) since stepping in for the first game of Round 2 and creating a massive amount of unexpected offense en route to a 4-1 series victory for Boston. On Twitter, the hashtag #LegendOfKrug appeared, with 140-character tributes/jokes exaggerating Krug’s feats, like “Wayne Gretzky watches Torey Krug and says, “I wish I could do that.” #LegendofKrug”. The former Michigan State captain, has five points in five games, along with a +3 rating. Three of his four goals have come on the power play, as well, with his Saturday afternoon strike being a rocket of a one-timer off a feed from Tyler Seguin. Now, Krug and the Bruins will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins, with a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals on the line. Can’t wait to see what the 5-foot-9 defenseman can come up with next.
