Jimmy Howard signs six-year extension with Red Wings

The Red Wings officially announced today that they have signed goaltender Jimmy Howard to a six-year extension with the club.

Detroit’s starting netminder will is now locked up through the 2018-19 season.

“We’re extremely pleased to have Jimmy under contract for the next six seasons,” said Wings GM Ken Holland in a press release.  “He’s entering the prime of his career and over the last four years has gained a tremendous amount of regular season and postseason experience.  He’s developed into a top-tier NHL goaltender and is a very important part of our team moving forward.  Jimmy is one of our leaders and we look forward to watching him elevate his game to the next level in a Red Wings sweater.”

The Ogdensburg, N.Y., native is in his fourth full season with the Red Wings, and holds a 17-12-6 record, a 2.31 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage. He has recorded three shutouts this season, as well.

Howard’s lifetime record with the Red Wings is 127-66-25, along with a 2.39 goals-against average, a .917 save percentage and 14 shutouts.

The Wings’ second-round selection (64th overall) in the 2003 NHL Draft spent four seasons with the Griffins before being promoted to full-time status with the Wings.
