Warrior Hockey Day in Michigan returns on February 16

FARMINGTON HILLS
– The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) is pleased to announce that the eighth annual Hockey Day in Michigan will take place on Saturday Feb. 16, 2013. This year’s event will again be sponsored by Warrior, a leading hockey equipment, apparel, and footwear manufacturer based in Warren, Mich.

“Warrior could not be prouder to once again sponsor Hockey Day in Michigan. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the game, give back to the local community and show fans that Warrior is committed to the growth of hockey in Michigan at all levels,” said Christine Knight, Brand Manager for Warrior Hockey. “We are hoping to help expand the event throughout the state through a variety of Hockey Day in Michigan activities.”

In addition, FOX Sports Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings, MiHockey and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) will once again join forces with the CCHA to bring the state-wide celebration of the sport to participants and fans across the Great Lakes State and expose hockey to new audiences.

This year’s event has once again been scheduled to coincide with USA Hockey’s sixth-annual ‘Hockey Weekend Across America’, February 15-17, 2013, and hockey associations around the state are encouraged to plan an event to help celebrate.

“Hockey Day in Michigan is again part of a nationwide celebration, and we are proud that Hockey Day has continued to grow year after year,” said CCHA Commissioner Fred Pletsch. “There are thousands of volunteers, coaches, officials, managers, and players who spend countless hours dedicated to the game, and Hockey Day provides an opportunity to honor those individuals and their contributions. This is a chance for everyone involved in the Michigan hockey community to spend a day sharing their love for the game and help expand the sport to a younger generation of future players and fans.”

Michigan has over 63,000 USA Hockey registered players, coaches and officials – the second most of any state in the nation – and is a great place to live if you love hockey.

“The state of Michigan, year after year, continues to be an elite part of the hockey world at every level and age group,” said Ken Holland, the Vice President and General Manager of the Detroit Red Wings. “Michigan is currently home to the 11-time Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings, the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, seven top-notch Division I NCAA programs and outstanding junior hockey, not to mention the numerous high school and youth teams across our great state. It’s exciting to live in a part of the world where the game of hockey means so much to so many people.”

FOX Sports Detroit’s coverage of the 2013 Warrior Hockey Day again includes coverage of the traditional CCHA doubleheader featuring Bowling Green at Ferris State (5:05 p.m.) and Northern Michigan at Michigan State (7:35 p.m.), in addition to special features on the sport in Michigan.

“For the eighth consecutive year, Hockey Day in Michigan will be a leading force to expand the game in Michigan,” said George Atkinson, President of the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association. “Hockey Day provides exposure to programs throughout the state and helps grow awareness for the sport. Through the efforts of Hockey Day, MAHA associations and teams have been able to provide new players the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of trying hockey for the first time.”
