Shaved Ice – Jan. 23

Rough night for the Wings…

Here is our recap and photo gallery from last night’s home opener, a game that the Red Wings lost by a score of 2-1. It was basically a shutout; Damien Brunner scored the Wings’ lone goal (his first in the NHL) with three seconds remaining in regulation.

Ian White is out for two-to-three weeks now, after suffering a bad cut on his leg during the loss. He joins a list of one, two, three, four…ahh forget it, I’ve lost count.

Before the game, Tomas Holmstrom officially announced his retirement. The JLA fans were able to give him a standing ovation, as he was invited to partake in a ceremonial puck drop before the Wings’ home opener.

It was a rough night for the Spartans, as well, but not so rough for the NTDP U18 team. Team USA headed to Munn Ice Arena and beat Michigan State, just a few weeks after beating Michigan at Yost.

The Lake Fenton Winter Classic brought competitive pond hockey to 287 players and 36 teams this last weekend – check out this feature on the tournament.

Tonight is the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Muskegon. We’re driving out there as soon as we send the latest issue of the magazine to press.

The CCHA just announced their all-decade team for the years 2000-13, and needless to say, there’s a bunch of Michigan natives on the list.

Here’s a GriffVision interview with the newest member of the Grand Rapids Griffins – hometown hero Mike Knuble. The Griffins take on Oklahoma City tonight at Van Andel.

Brayden Schenn will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL after he left his feet during a hit in the Flyers’ game against New Jersey. I don’t think phone calls with Shanny are very fun in these situations.

The Stars might still be stuck in Hockeytown – their plane couldn’t take off last night after engine problems due to the cold weather.

Don’t look now, but the Wings’ friends from the Windy City are already 3-0 on the season. The Blackhawks could be the team to beat in the West this year.

The Perani family is hosting an online auction to sell a whole bunch of random items the late Bob Perani acquired from his time in Thailand. We looked through the stuff and didn’t see anything hockey, but it’s still worth a click to see some of the items up for bidding. Very unique products.

We’ll be back with you shortly for coverage from Muskegon.
