A source close to the situation has told MiHockey that if the NHL Winter Classic is canceled, the Hockeytown Winter Festival at Comerica Park will be canceled, as well.
The NHL canceled all games through Nov. 30 today, and ESPN’s John Buccigross tweeted shortly after that a source expects the Winter Classic to be canceled on Monday.
The outdoor events that were to be held in Detroit, in conjunction with the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, will be rescheduled to indoor locations. The Great Lakes Invitational will be moved to Joe Louis Arena – the traditional host of the college hockey tournament – and played on Dec. 29-30. The GLI was scheduled to be played on Dec. 27-28 at Comerica Park.
Other events scheduled during the Hockeytown Winter Festival included Ontario Hockey League games (featuring Michigan’s Plymouth Whalers and Saginaw Spirit), and American Hockey League game between the Grand Rapids Griffins and Toronto Marlies, games between alumni of the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, and youth and high school games.
