Shaved Ice – March 29

Hello once again, everyone.  I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for some playoff hockey.  Brian Kalisher here to talk puck.

Quick hits

The Red Wings probably want last night’s game back, as they lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2.  Even with goals by Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall, the Wings couldn’t muster enough firepower to get the job done.  They’ll try their luck tomorrow night against a tough Nashville squad.

If you haven’t heard, former Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick signed on with the Columbus Blue Jackets for an amateur tryout and even suited up as the backup last night against Detroit.  Hunwick sported his Michigan helmet – pretty brave for a young Michigan man in Columbus.

You only have to wait one more week until the Ferris State Bulldogs begin play in their first Frozen Four ever.  Out of four Michigan-based teams in the NCAA tournament, Ferris State was the only team to advance to represent the Mitten.

Highlight reel

We’ll spare you the highlights from last night’s Wings loss.  Instead, take a look at what they did off the ice with Make-A-Wish Foundation to help a youngster going through a rough time.

Outside the Mitten

It wasn’t a spectacular performance, but hey, goals count.  Justin Williams slid in an empty-netter to ice the game for his Kings, making him our Michi-gamer of the night.

Former Michigan State captain Torey Krug signed a deal with the Boston Bruins a couple days ago, deciding to forgo his senior season in East Lansing for a new adventure in Beantown.

Here’s what the NHL playoff situation would look like if it started right now.
