Shaved Ice – March 28

Greetings, hockey lovers.  Let’s jump into some hockey chatter.  Brian Kalisher here to get it started.

Quick hits

Today was a day of dreams realized for a couple of former Michigan standouts.  Goaltender Shawn Hunwick signed on with the Columbus Blue Jackets for an amateur tryout.  Here’s the catch – due to the injury of goaltender Steve Mason, Hunwick will dress as tonight’s backup against the Red Wings. Another Michigan Man, Greg Pateryn, etched a 2-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens.

Red Berenson had this to say on his former goaltender:

“Columbus called us today and told us that one of their goalies got hurt this morning.  They asked if Hunwick was available.  I called Hunwick and he said he was available and so he’s on his way down there.  I’ll be watching on TV.  He obviously has my blessing.”

The Red Wings will hit the ice tonight against the Blue Jackets, after shellacking them 7-2 Monday night.  Wouldn’t it be interesting if Hunwick saw some ice time against his hometown NHL club?  We’ll have to wait and see.

The Ferris State Bulldogs will be the Mitten’s lone representation in the Frozen Four.  It’ll be their first appearance ever.

Highlight reel

Former MSU captain Torey Krug joined up with the Bruins yesterday and talked to the media.

Outside the Mitten

We’re not joking when we tell you Ryan Miller is our Michi-gamer of the night again.  The Sabres netminder earned his fifth win in a row, leading Buffalo into eighth place in the East.

Evgeni Malkin continues to lead the NHL scoring race.

Taylor Hall is out for the rest of the season after having surgery.
