The Final Saturday – CCHA recaps for the Michigan teams

The CCHA regular season officially ends tonight. Here’s a look at how the Michigan-based teams fared, and what it means moving forward.

Michigan at Bowling Green

The Wolverines posted a 3-0 shutout over the Falcons, avenging a 4-3 loss on Friday night. With the win, Michigan wraps up the second spot in the CCHA standings, guaranteeing them home ice in the second round. The top five seeds in the conference get a bye for the first weekend of the playoffs, and then after that, the teams will be re-seeded and the Wolverines will find out who they are playing. David Wohlberg, Kevin Lynch, and Mac Bennett scored for Michigan, while Shawn Hunwick made 22 saves in goal.

Western Michigan at Ferris State

The night after they wrapped up the top spot in the CCHA, the Ferris State Bulldogs were shut out by the Broncos. With the win, the Broncos ensure that they will have home ice in the quarterfinals. Dan DeKeyser had two goals for WMU, and Shane Berschbach added one of his own, while Frank Slubowski made 25 saves to earn the win for the Broncos.

Michigan State at Notre Dame

The Spartans posted a 4-2 win Saturday night in South Bend to secure the fifth spot in the CCHA standings, giving them the final spot for byes in the first round. The Spartans will travel to Miami for a quarterfinals match-up with the RedHawks. Kevin Walrod, Chris Forfar, Torey Krug, and Dean Chelios all scored for the Spartans. With his goal, Krug ties ND’s T.J. Tynan for the CCHA scoring title.

Lake Superior at Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan ended their season on a high note, topping Lake Superior 5-3 on home ice. With their sixth-place finish, the Wildcats will host Bowling Green in the first round of the CCHA playoffs next weekend. NMU had goals from Tyler Gron, Ryan Daugherty, Mitch Jones, Matt Thurber, and Kyle Follmer. Meanwhile, the Lakers will finish in seventh place, and should be taking on the Alaska Nanooks in the first round. Stephen Perfetto, Colin Campbell, and Fred Cassiani scored for the Lakers.
