The Final Friday – CCHA recaps for the Michigan teams

Ferris State picked up the point they needed, while the Spartans and Wolverines couldn’t get the job done on the road. Here’s how the final friday of the regular season played out for the Michigan schools in the CCHA.

Ferris State at Western Michigan

While the Broncos got the extra point in the shootout, Ferris State got the points that mattered most – they have officially wrapped up the top spot in the CCHA. The 1-1 regulation tie gives the Bulldogs the regular-season CCHA title. That’s a byproduct of their remarkable run down the stretch, as they’ve improved their record to 10-0-4 over the last 14 games. Jordie Johnston scored for FSU, while Shane Berschbach scored for WMU. The shootout was decided by Greg Squires’ lone goal for the Broncos.

Michigan at Bowling Green

Goals from Phil Di Giuseppe, David Wohlberg, and Alex Guptill weren’t enough for the Wolverines Friday night, as they dropped a 4-3 decision to last-place Bowling Green. Sophomore forward Bryce Williamson scored the game-winning goal with just 1:24 remaining in regulation, to give the Falcons a win that will surely help with morale heading into next season. The Wolverines, however, will get one more shot at them tonight. UM is currently tied with WMU for second place.

Michigan State at Notre Dame

The Spartans couldn’t figure out a way to beat Steven Summerhays Friday night, and they paid for it. The sophomore goaltender made 25 saves as the Fighting Irish posted a 2-0 shutout win over the Spartans. Jeff Costello scored, and Peter Schneider picked up his first collegiate goal in the win. MSU is in fifth place, one point out of the all-important fourth-place spot in the regular-season standings behind Miami.

Lake Superior at Northern Michigan

Senior forward Justin Florek contributed a goal and two assists Friday night, more than enough to help his Wildcats to a 6-2 win. Reed Seckel, Tyler Gron, Stephan Vigier, Matt Thurber, and Andrew Cherniwchan all scored for the Wildcats, who are now stuck in a three-way tie for seventh place.
