The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) announced today that Sam Devaprasad, from Sault Ste. Marie High School, is the first recipient of the David Mannino College Scholarship, as part of the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.

The college scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00is  awarded to a student-athlete who participated in the 2012 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.

Devaprasad was selected by a random draw and presented with the award on Feb. 10.  The scholarship will be to an accredited college or university and applied to the Devaprasad’s tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year.

“I feel honored and humbled to receive the first David Maninno scholarship award,” Devaprasad said in a statement released by the MIHL. ” Talking to David’s parents, it was nice to learn what an amazing person he was, and how much he had accomplished in his life.  I would like to thank my hockey coaches who have helped out a lot, particularly Coach Ferroni for nominating me for this award.  He has always selflessly given us so much of his time and energy for the team over the years.  I also would like to thank God, my parents, teachers and friends for supporting me.

“The MIHL showcase is one of the most fun hockey weekends my team takes part in every year.  The competition is outstanding, the organization is great and it prepares our team for playoffs.  On top of that spending couple of nights with my teammates downstate is really fun, and the memories are something that I’ll always remember.”

Devaprasad holds a 4.046 on a 4.0 GPA scale at Sault Ste. Marie High, which means he has his pick at which school to attend next fall. Right now he is deciding between the University of Michigan to  study aerospace engineering or Lake Superior State University to study mechanical engineering.

Devaprasad was nominated for the award by his head coach, John Ferroni.  In addition to being a senior goaltender on the varsity hockey team for two years, Sam also lettered in golf for four years, and soccer for two years.  Devaprasad has also participated in over 260 hours of volunteer community service during his junior year of high school.

From the MIHL:

To honor the life of David Mannino, the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) renamed the MIHL Showcase Scholarship – It is now the David Mannino Scholarship and will be awarded annually during the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.  The decision to rename the scholarships in David’s name came easily. “David’s life exemplified the goals and objectives of the scholarship – he was a student athlete and a young man with great moral character”, explained MIHL President Andy Weidenbach.  The scholarship is privately funded and does receive any proceeds from the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.
