Shaved Ice – Jan. 18

Good evening, hockey fans.  Seeing that this is the first time since taking over as editor that we’ve put out issues of the magazine in back-to-back weeks, Shaved Ice is a little late today – my apologies.

Quick Hits

Since the Red Wings hit the road last night, I was able to get off the road – finally – and work on bringing you the latest issue of Michigan Hockey. That road hasn’t treated the Red Wings kindly this season, but after a shootout goal by Happy (Jiri) Hudler to beat Stars’ goalie Richard Bachman, the Wings knocked off the Dallas Stars 3-2 - adding a win away from JLA.

It’s almost official – Ann Arbor will hold the 2012 NHL Winter Classic.  While the Red Wings and Toronto Maples Leafs face off at the “Big House,” speculation says that a second outdoor rink will be set up in downtown Detroit at Comerica Park.  The second rink will hold an alumni game, along with possibly the Great Lakes Invitational.

Highlight Reel

Here’s the highlights from the Wings’ shootout victory.

Outside the Mitten

Out West last night, the Los Angeles Kings etched out a 3-2 shootout victory of their own.  Former Plymouth Whalers’ star Justin Williams found the score sheet both in regulation and in the shootout, making him our Michi-Gamer of the night.

The fate of Oilers’ star Taylor Hall is still being decided after the forward was cut above the eye by teammate Corey Potter’s skate in yesterday’s warm-ups.  The team was preparing for a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets when a group of Oilers’ players – including Hall - tripped over one another.
