Friday night recaps

Helping you keep track of your favorite teams.

Here’s a quick recap of how your favorite Michigan teams did Friday night.

The Red Wings continued their perfect start to the season, taking care of the winless Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 at Joe Louis Arena. Valtteri Filppula had three assists – two of which on goals from linemate Johan Franzen – and an empty-net goal of his own to lead the Wings. Captain Nick Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, while Jimmy Howard made 32 saves to earn his fourth win of the year. Read the official recap here.

The Griffins didn’t have as much luck as their NHL partner. Despite a goal by Michigan native Chris Conner and 32 saves by Joey MacDonald, Grand Rapids lost to the Oklahoma City Barons 4-1.

Plymouth posted five goals Friday night as well, beating the Erie Otters 5-1. Tom Wilson led the Whalers with two goals and one assist, while Mitchell Heard, Garrett Meurs, and Jamie Devane also scored. Matt Mahalak had 21 saves to get the win.

The Wolverines and Wildcats clashed in Marquette, with the home team prevailing 5-3. Dylan Walchuk, Matt Thurber, Mitch Jones, Tyler Gron, and Justin Florek all scored for the Wildcats, and Reid Ellingson got the win with 24 saves. Lindsay Sparks, Zach Hyman, and Travis Lynch scored for the Wolverines, who may be without their starting goaltender in the rematch tomorrow. Shawn Hunwick was given a five-minute major for contact to the head and a game misconduct during a skirmish in the second period that also saw fighting majors and disqualifications to Michigan’s Luke Moffatt and NMU’s Andrew Cherniwchan. Adam Janecyk finished the game for the Wolverines, and he may have to play again tomorrow.

The Spartans were unable to complete the sweep of their rivals from Ohio State. The Buckeyes responded from last night’s loss with a 5-2 win in East Lansing. Kevin Walrod had both goals for the Green and White, but it wasn’t enough to get Drew Palmisano wins in back-to-back nights. The Spartans host Robert Morris next weekend.

The Bulldogs posted a big home win to start their CCHA season off on the right foot. Ferris State, led by two goals from Eric Alexander, beat No. 10 Miami (Ohio) in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs’ 5-0-0 start is their best since 1979-80.

The Lakers dropped a 1-0 decision to Bowling Green. The loss marked the first of the season for LSSU, who are now 4-1-0 on the year. Adam Berkie scored the lone goal for BGSU.

The Broncos had the latest game of the bunch, playing in Alaska to start their CCHA campaign. Western Michigan topped UAF 4-1, led by three-goal second period. The Broncos will stay up late once again Saturday, looking to complete the sweep in the faraway land.
